Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a naturally produced hormone found only in pregnant women and their fetuses and is what pregnancy tests look for. It was mislabeled in 1928 as “gonadotropic,” indicating a sex hormone, but has since been discovered to be a hormone “complex” that communicates with the anterior pituitary gland through the hypothalamus.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that HCG helps to mobilize fat deposits that have formed around the hips, thighs, abdomen, and upper arms. Once this fat has become mobile within the body, it is available for use as a source of fuel. When HCG is combined with a very low-calorie diet, it makes abnormal fat available for consumption by the body, which reduces cravings and enables a person to stick to the diet and lose on average a pound per day.

HCG actually targets the hypothalamus in the brain, which regulates the digestive system’s ability to receive, coordinate, and respond to metabolic cues and signals from the digestive system. By integrating these metabolic signals, the hypothalamus tells us when we need to eat to maintain a metabolic (body weight) “set point,” much like a thermostat for your furnace. When administered in small daily doses, HCG helps to “mobilize” or make available for fuel the abnormal fat deposits that have formed around the hips, thighs, abdomen, and upper arms. This facilitates a “targeted” loss in people who, after a history of dieting, find it difficult to lose weight.

Those who lose weight quickly on other diets often have excess skin, commonly termed sagging. This is because, when looking for energy, your body looks for the easiest energy source first and finds structural and normal fat deposits. The loss of this tissue affects the shape and contour of the face and other parts of the body. Because HCG targets only abnormal fat deposits, the body’s structural and normal fat tissues are left intact.

In contrast to other forms of weight loss, the HCG diet produces a more immediately noticeable effect on the body, because all of the fat being burned is directly targeted at the common problem areas. In essence, HCG not only helps with weight loss, but also helps to reshape the body and maintain and even improve health through fat loss.

What is HCG?

In medical terms, HCG is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. A “naturally occurring hormone” is produced during a women’s pregnancy by the developing embryo soon after conception and later is found in the placenta.

Through a series of trials and experiments on thousands of patients, Dr. Simeon found that the best results were achieved by restricting the patient’s daily diet to a low Calorie diet and giving a small dose of HCG. The conclusion was that patients lost an average of one pound per day. Patients had a reduced appetite and could comfortably go about their normal occupations. “It was also perfectly evident that only Abnormal Fat was being consumed, as there were no signs of any depletion of Normal Fat. Their skin remained fresh and gradually their figures became entirely normal.”

How does this happen? Dr. Simeon explains that a woman may gain weight during pregnancy, but she never becomes obese in the strict sense of the word. Her body is under the influence of the HCG, which circulates in enormous quantities in her body during pregnancy, Abnormal Fat deposits are never formed. At delivery, she is suddenly deprived of HCG and Abnormal Fat starts to leave fixed fat deposits. HCG has been medically known for more than eighty years.

What is the difference between structural, normal, and abnormal fat?

Structural fat fills the gaps between various body structures and acts as a sort of packing material for delicate organs like the kidneys and coronary arteries. It also keeps the skin smooth and taut, as well as providing the springy cushion of hard fat under the bones of the feet, which is necessary for walking.

Normal fat is a freely available fuel that is deposited all over the body. Both structural and normal fat, even at full capacity, cannot produce obesity.

Abnormal fat is the accumulation of fat that an overweight person carries and is deposited all over the body, though it mostly accumulates on the hips, buttocks, abdomen, upper arms, and thighs. Although it is a potential fuel reserve, it is not available to the body in a nutritional emergency until the body has first depleted its structural and normal fat stores.

Common HCG Questions

Can I take the drops longer than 40 days?

You can take them up to 40 days and as few as 20, but you must then take a break for however many days you were on the drops before you start another session. This is to make sure your body doesn’t become immune to the HCG. You will need three bottles to go a full 40-day round.

How much weight can I expect to lose on the program?

On average, women lose 20 to 30 pounds per month and men lose about 30 to 40 pounds per month. Some people lose as many as 10 to 12 pounds the first week, but the average is 5 to 7 pounds or a pound a day.

Does the weight loss slow down?

Often a large amount of weight is lost in the first month, and then the actual pounds seen on the scale decreases in a more gradual, stairstep fashion. Both pounds and inches are continuously lost while on the program, and after a period of time most people experience another large drop on the scale, in clothes size, or both.

Is HCG safe for men?

HCG is found in the tissue of both fetus (of either gender) and mother during pregnancy. Dr. Simeons actually developed the HCG diet for obese boys, and men get even faster results and tend to lose more weight than women on the program.

What if I am taking medications?

Always talk to your prescribing doctor before starting a weight-loss program or before stopping medications. In general, HCG does not interact with any medications, including the pill and birth control injections; however, people on hormone replacement therapy, steroids, seizure medications, and other prescriptions with “weight gain” as a possible side effect do not typically report positive results if they continue taking such medications on this protocol. Once again, talk to your prescribing doctor before beginning any weight-loss program.

What if I become pregnant?

First of all, congratulations! The HCG diet is not for pregnant women, and you should stop the program and consult your physician if you become pregnant while on it.

Is it OK to skip a meal or protein at one of my meals?

No. For the diet to be effective, it’s important to eat all 500 calories each day, and especially protein to prevent muscle loss.

Can you split up your fruits and eat them when you want?

You get two fruits each day and can eat them for breakfast or as a snack.

Will three bottles be enough for a full round?

Yes, it is enough for either the minimum 23 days or for the full 40-day program.

Is it normal to get headaches during the first week?

Light headaches during the first week are common because your body is releasing fat cells very rapidly and you will be going through a major detox. Take aspirin or Tylenol as long as they’re not sugar coated.

Can I drink alcohol on the HCG diet?

The original HCG diet protocol by does not mention alcohol.

Why is HCG called the weight-loss “cure”?

HCG is called a “cure” by some because it “reprograms” your body to use stored abnormal fat for energy when calories are reduced for a period of time. It helps you maintain your new weight, rather than regaining the pounds you lost.

Is it healthy to lose 1 to 2 pounds a day with HCG?

HCG weight loss studies have shown that weight lost following the Simeons protocol comes directly from adipose fat tissue rather than lean muscle. In doing so, the weight lost comes directly from fat and does not strip the body of much needed muscle, vitamins or minerals essential to maintain good health, while at the same time, releasing excessive amounts of fat-stored nutrients into the blood stream to be absorbed by the body. For this reason, HCG dieters report a feeling and appearance of great health and marvel at the loss of negative health risks they had as an overweight individual.

Why is the 500-calorie/Very Low Calorie Diet important?

HCG causes your hypothalamus to mobilize the fat out of the fat storage locations so that it’s available for use. While you are only consuming 500 calories, your hypothalamus is continually releasing the fat stored in your body. Because of this, your body is actually operating on thousands of calories a day. The result is your body using thousands of calories of fat from your body each day, the reason HCG dieters lose 1 to 2 pounds of fat or more, per day.

Will I be hungry on 500 calories a day?

It is common for mild hunger during the first few days. However this will pass by the 2nd week. You will find even very tiny servings, to be completely satisfying. This is partly due to your hypothalamus adjusting your metabolic rate, but largely due to the amount of calories circulating in your system from the fat being released. It is common that HCG dieters feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 500 calorie limit.

Will I gain weight after I stop the HCG protocol?

After the HCG diet, you will find your appetite has changed, your eating behavior will be changed and your body will, of course, have changed. This is the perfect opportunity to adopt that healthy lifestyle to maintain your weight. You will find a minimum amount of exercise will be sufficient for maintaining a very healthy body-from yoga, to 20minutes of cardio a day, or whatever you enjoy that gets your heart moving. With your hypothalamus reset, your metabolism will be different and you will be able to eat  moderately without feeling the need to overeat.

HCG health benefits?

Dr. A.T.W. Simeons wrote a book called Pounds and Inches for other doctors and he states that HCG causes a change in metabolism. Doctors from all over the world have come to Italy to study the HCG method, first hand in his clinic in the Salvador Mundi International Hospital in Rome.

He states HCG makes your body mobilize fat out of the fat storage locations. Weight loss comes from adipose tissue, not muscle. And HCG does not strip the body of vitamins and minerals. And if you follow the diet, you can keep that weight off!

• Assists patients in shedding up to 30+ pounds over a5-6 week period.

• Cholesterol: When the total amount of circulating cholesterol is normal before treatment, this absolute amount is neither significantly increased nor decreased. But when an obese patient with an abnormally high cholesterol and already showing signs of arteriosclerosis is treated with HCG, his blood pressure drops and his coronary circulation seems to improve, and yet his total blood cholesterol may soar to heights never before reached

• Blood Sugar: Assists in normalizing blood sugar levels. The blood sugar continues to drop from day to day and often reaches normal values in 2-3 weeks

• Rheumatism: All rheumatic pains, even those associated with demonstrable bony lesions, seem to improve
subjectively within a few days of treatment, and often require neither cortisone nor salicylates.

• Blood Pressure: When the blood pressure is abnormally high, and provided there are no detectable renal lesions, the pressure drops, as it usually does in pregnancy

• Psoriasis, Fingernails, Hair: Psoriasis greatly improves during treatment but may relapse when the treatment is over. Most patients spontaneously report a marked improvement in the condition of brittle fingernails. The loss of hair not infrequently associated with obesity is temporarily arrested

• Improves skin elasticity.

• Dramatically reduces the appearance of cellulite.

• Results in the disappearance of food cravings.

• Increases energy levels.

• It is safe and healthy.

What Does HCG Do?

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition* reports that HCG helps to mobilize fat deposits that have formed around the hips, thighs, abdomen, and upper arms. Once this fat has become mobile within the body, it is available for use as a source of fuel. Research indicates that, when administered in small daily doses, it helps the body burn more fat when combined with a low-calorie diet and actually facilitates a targeted weight loss. It should be noted that a pregnant woman can excrete as much as 1 million units of HCG per day.

Difference Between HCG Diet and Low Calorie Diets

Many people have asked us, “won’t I lose weight on a low-calorie diet, no matter what?” That question is very reasonable until you understand what the HCG does for you while reducing your food intake. You would have some weight loss with just a 500-calorie diet; however, you would not have the energy to maintain daily activities like work and taking care of a family. With HCG, your body will get all the calories it needs to function by burning abnormal fat stores. Without HCG to direct the body about which type of fat to burn, a low-calorie diet will result in the destruction of structural and normal fat and even muscle.

Will I get hungry?

Even though you are taking in fewer calories (only 500 daily), HCG mobilizes abnormal fat to make it available to the body as an energy source, naturally reducing appetite. Most people have plenty of energy and feel good while on the program, and after about two days, many notice a significant decrease in appetite.

Won’t my metabolism slow down on a low-calorie diet?

Normally, when one cuts back calories and fat, the body stores abnormal fat and consumes structural and normal fat tissue, resulting in a lower metabolic rate and a high chance of weight gain. However, when a very specific, low-calorie diet is used in conjunction with HCG, the hormone signals the body to consume abnormal fat cells, thus decreasing excess fat reserves without compromising body structure. It’s a natural process, so no ill effects.

HCG Diet Side Effects

Common Side Effects With HCG Shots and HCG Drops

HCG Side Effects & Is It For Me?

The HCG diet was first publicized in 1954 by Dr. A. T. W. Simeons and has been successfully and safely used since the 1950s as an effective weight-loss program with minimal side effects (mild headaches, irritability, restlessness, slight water retention). Though Dr. Simeons’ report in the journal Lancet (1954) drew some attention at the time, it was decades before his program became popular. Today, numerous clinics offer HCG treatments and weight-management plans that have few if any negative side effects—besides weight loss, of course.

Dr. Simeons’ original diet employed daily injections of HCG, but now a homeopathic, oral version is also available. What is the difference? Well, homeopathic HCG starts out with the pure hormone, which is then diluted many times to preserve its energy in a suspended form. Effectiveness is not compromised, and according to one double-blind study, the homeopathic form creates the exact same response in the body as daily HCG injections. Rather than a once-daily injection, the homeopathic is taken by mouth two times, once in the morning and once at night. The advantages are that you can travel with it, it does not have to be refrigerated, it stays stable longer, and it includes beneficial nutrients to help balance the entire body.

Most participants see the same if not better weight-loss results (20 to 40 pounds in about a month) with the homeopathic drops as with injections but without the irritation or bruising. Those who have done both forms often report less hunger and more energy on the drops than with the injections.

If you are ready to lose weight by supplementing your reserve of the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone, then you may be wondering if the HCG shots or drops offer any kind of side effect.

Depending upon which method you choose to take, there are different side effects with each kind. The shots seem to offer more intense levels of side effects, while the sublingual drops are relatively mild. If you are considering this diet plan, read on for an in-depth discussion of these side effects.

Side Effects with the Injections

If you opt for the injections, you are going with the old-school method of supplementing your hormone reserves. This method was developed by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, who first observed the effect of the hormone on the human body several decades ago. At the time, injections were the only means for getting the hormone into the body. So he developed his "Pounds and Inches" protocol, including an intramuscular injection of the hormone once per day.

Injections do prompt dramatic weight loss, but they also come with quite a few side effects. These include:

  • Headaches;
  • Fatigue;
  • Leg cramps.

These are the most common side effects associated with the injections. Many dieters also report getting rashes, mood swings, or having pains in their upper abdomen. If you do have any of these problems, you should cease using the injections immediately and consult with a physician. Complications are rare, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Side Effects with the Oral HCG

If you opt for oral HCG you are going for the more newly developed method, which is pain-free and much less expensive. Using the principles of homeopathic medicine, the hormone is distilled several times, gaining potency with each distillation. You then ingest these drops by placing them under your tongue several times a day. These drops have gained quite a following because they offer the same dramatic weight loss as the injections in a much more convenient, less expensive, and pain-free method.

There have been no negative side effects reported with the use of the HCG drops. In fact, in a recent study, dieters switched from injections to drops and found they had greater energy and fewer hunger pains between meals. Therefore, the drops have a proven track record with both weight loss and hunger control.

Always keep in mind that you may feel some adjustment as you go on the very low-calorie diet (VCLD). Usually this is more of a mental and emotional change than actual physical hunger. The diet program will help you distinguish between emotional eating and real physical hunger. To ease this transition, make sure you follow the protocol exactly, and do not neglect the "load" days at the start of the diet plan.

Other reasons to prefer the homeopathic drops include:

• Legally ordered from a U.S. company

• Easy travel

• No mixing

• No refrigeration required

• No expiration date if unopened

• No injections or alcohol pads

• More energy and less hunger reported by some participants

Is the HCG Diet Right for Me?

While no diet is as simple as sitting around the house eating cookies and donuts, the liquid HCG diet gives you are a real shot at reaching your ultimate weight goals. Why? You first start out the diet eating all the fatty foods you want the first two days. This gets both your body ready but even more important your mind ready to start losing weight. When you start the reduced calorie portion of the diet you are ready for the break from food.

Vitamins and Beauty Products While on the HCG diet

Vitamins and Beauty Products While on the HCG diet

You should take vitamin B12 every day. This will help increase your energy and metabolism. We recommend it in liquid form so it can be quickly absorbed into your system. A good multivitamin also helps, but make sure it is sugar free and has no fat-soluble ingredients like fish oils or vitamin D. Potassium will help if you experience leg cramps. A calcium/magnesium combination can be added if needed.

Do I need to buy any special cosmetics, lotions, soaps, or hair products?

Because the body absorbs fats and other such substances through the skin and hair the same way as it does through the body, your cosmetic “diet” should match the 500-calorie phase of the HCG diet. Examine the ingredients of any product you apply to the skin or hair to ensure that none lists oil, fruits, starches, or anything that ends in -ose. Even “oil-free” products can include different types of oil, so be thorough in your examination. It is strongly recommended that you not use a liquid foundation, but rather try something like Bare Escentuals mineral makeup or other more natural makeup lines. Remember, the program is only for about a month.

Can I exercise while I’m on the HCG Diet?

Excercising Tips While on HCG Diet

Those on the HCG diet only get 500 calories per day, which is not enough to support an exercise regime, even though participants will not feel excess hunger and generally have good energy levels. Limited amounts of exercise are okay—20 minutes of walking, for instance—but those who insist on incorporating intense workouts while on the HCG diet could inhibit their weight loss by burning too much so fast that your body begins to save every calorie it takes in.

A Few Words of Wisdom

Congratulations for making up your mind to lose weight and live a healthier and happier life. We know you are excited to do the best possible on this program. We are excited for you too! However, you need to be wise and follow the plan exactly so you see the best results. We just said in the paragraph above that people who over exert themselves and try to exercise as they might normally do or think they should while trying to lose weight will not get the best possible results. Ask yourself, “Why burn myself out and not get the most out of the liquid HCG diet?” Trust us on this one. Take the drops two times a day spaced out evenly, eat the meal plan as we outline and if you want to exercise, limit it to no more than 20 minutes per day. Enjoy the results of living the liquid HCG diet!

How to SUCCEED on HCG and diet Tips.

Dr Simeon spent many years testing and retesting what worked and what did not work for this diet. He eliminated particular food items by examining the results. If a food did not enhance his findings, he eliminated it. For example, why not Chicken and Turkey? The reason is simple, turkey was found to be a hindrance to the success Dr. Simeon was looking for. This is also true with fatty American beef, eggs, fresh tuna, cantaloupe, green beans, oily body creams, etc.

He also states, "don’t mix vegetables". This seems odd, but the results were clear. Mixing vegetables gave a slight variance in weight loss. How much is unknown, but why risk it?

People have stalled their weight loss by using prohibited seasonings. For example, some garlic salt may be suitable; however, there are bands that have sugar and starch as an ingredient. Using the wrong seasoning, even a dash, can delay your weight loss. Check the labels, do not be fooled.

Let’s face it; we all want to stay motivated throughout our HCG experience and feel full on 500 calories. The good news is that by taking the HCG your body will be burning the unwanted fat in your body and you won’t feel hungry like you are starving yourself. But you will still have moments when you need a little bit of help to get through to the next meal. What is the best way to feel full, without cheating? Here are some tips to keep you motivated:

Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time

If you work or are a busy mom, you can plan your meals a week in advance. Write down in a food journal your meal plan. This will not be too hard because you only have to plan out your lunch and dinner. Remember, breakfast should be coffee, tea, or flavored water. There are several different flavors of Stevia and herbal teas. Change them up and experiment with flavors that are appealing to you. You can check out our website for great recipes ideas for lunch and dinner. Having a plan and sticking to it will ensure great results! So much of your success will depend on taking out the guess- work. Cook all the meat you will need to eat for the week and freeze it to make meal time easier.

Spice up Your HCG Experience

Who would be motivated by a plain piece of dry chicken? Try a new spice or sauce with your protein! Lemon juice, seasonings of all types (check the label for hidden carbohydrates), tomato sauce, and flavored Stevia drops can all help add a new “kick” to your bland diet. Most people learn to cook foods in new and interesting ways that stick with them even after they are done getting to their goal weight with HCG.

Switch Up Your Fruits and Veggies

Although apples are a delicious fruit to eat on the HCG diet plan, you can switch up your fruits for each meal and give yourself some variety. Try a ½ grapefruit, strawberries, or an orange. You can eat them cold or heat them up, add cinnamon, or add a little flavored Stevia for sweetening. Vegetables are flavorful and filling. Remember to only eat one kind of fruit or vegetable per meal.

Don’t Be Discouraged

The liquid HCG diet is very motivating compared to other diets because of the quick results! If you have reached a plateau for a day or two, try the following suggestions to continue seeing results: Read all of the labels on your foods. Some proteins contain additives that can contain calories or sugars. Women may see a lull in weight loss during their menstrual cycle.

If you are not exercising, start with a brisk walk of 20 minutes in the mornings or evenings. If you are already on an exercise plan, try to add a few more minutes of a moderate cardio exercise to your day or try a new cardio exercise that will raise your heart rate above resting. You can always increase your water intake even more, and try skipping your breadstick or Melba toast. Remember to get your beauty rest. A rested body is a healthier body. It can definitely aid in your results with the liquid HCG diet.

HCG Diet Protocol Summary

Here is a summary of the original HCG diet from Dr. Simeons manuscript

Phase 1: Day 1 and 2 BINGE and begin HCG

Take HCG two times a day: 12 hours apart

Eat anything and everything you can…especially foods high in fat. This is crucial to build up the fat you will be burning off. If you do not really binge during these 2 days the diet will be much more difficult. It will also help you to not feel hungry during your first few days you have reduced your calories to 500 per day. Enjoy yourself and know that this will help you lose more. Crazy huh? But it works!

Phase 2: Day 3 – 40 (max): Begin STRICT 500 Calorie Diet and continue taking HCG

Depending on how much weight you want to lose you can do phase 2 for as little as 3 weeks but need to limit it to under 40 days. If you would like to lose more weight after the 40 days, complete phase 3 to help reset your hypothalamus and give your body a rest from dieting and then start over with phase 1 again.

Take HCG two times a day: 12 hours apart

Drink at least 64 oz of liquid daily (water, coffee or tea)

Take the HCG 30 minutes before or after drinking or eating.

ONLY 8 ITEMS MAY BE EATEN EACH DAY AND YOU MUST STAY UNDER 500 CALORIES PER DAY

Phase 3: The Day After You Stop the 500 Calorie Diet For the First 3 Weeks

The goal for this phase is to create a new weight set point that your body automatically maintains, close to your last HCG date weight. Such a set point is established by the hypothalamus, which is the area of the brain that controls hunger and body weight and which is “taking orders,” so to speak, from the HCG.

At the point you notice that you can eat what you want and pretty much maintain a certain weight, that’s your set point, be it high or low. You are resetting this point during phase 3. Remember, the longer time period you spend within a small weight range, the better and quicker your body will settle in on your new set point. Here are the steps:

• Stop taking the HCG drops.

• Weigh yourself in the morning without clothes and with an empty bladder. This is your last HCG date weight.

• Stick to a minimum 1,500-calorie intake, eating what you want, when you want it, except NO SUGARS and NO STARCHES, including sweeteners like honey, aspartame, or Splenda.

• Weigh yourself every morning to make sure you stay within 2 pounds of your last HCG date weight. If you are 2.1 pounds over, perform a Mini-Steak Day.

• Mini-Steak Day or apple day: Skip breakfast and lunch but take in plenty of water, tea, coffee, or Yoli. In the evening, eat a huge steak with only an apple or a raw tomato. If you do not like steak you can eat six large apples for the day.

Remember that as long as you follow phase 3 guidelines (no sugars/no starches), small variances in weight, usually due to water retention or eating at a restaurant, won’t prevent your setting a new weight set point. Also, most people are successful going to a minimum 1,500-calorie diet because their new set point allows them to burn 2,000 calories each day.

The danger in eating less than 1,500 calories is that it could put your body back into a starvation mode that usually leads it to again accumulate abnormal fat cells.
